Stakeholders from civil society organizations, academia, public institution and community groups gathered for agroecology capacity-strengthening workshop aimed at promoting resilient and sustainable food systems in Rwanda. The three-day workshop takes a place in Musanze District.
The training was organized by Rwanda Climate Change and Development Network in collaboration with Trócaire and the University of Rwanda College of Agriculture, Forestry and Food Science, with support through its engagement within the Alliance for Food Sovereignty in Africa (AFSA) network, as part of ongoing efforts to strengthen agroecological practices and climate resilience in communities across the continent.
Speaking during the opening session, Salama Gata Sylvia, Program Manager at RCCDN, said the workshop reflects a shared commitment to transforming food systems into models of resilience, sustainability, and equity through agroecology.
She noted that bringing together civil society actors, public institution, researchers, and technical experts creates an opportunity to bridge scientific knowledge with grassroots experience in responding to climate and food security challenges.
“Our food systems must become more resilient and sustainable, and this workshop provides a platform to connect scientific knowledge with community practices,” she said, encouraging participants to actively exchange ideas and experiences throughout the training.
The workshop brought together representatives from RCCDN member organizations, technical experts, facilitators, and advocates working in agriculture, climate resilience, and environmental sustainability.
Kabeza Angelique, Program Manager at Trócaire, emphasized the importance of partnerships in advancing sustainable agriculture and community resilience.
“Collaborations between organizations such as RCCDN, Trócaire, and UR-CAFF are critical in supporting local communities to adapt to climate change while improving food production systems and protecting natural resources,” she said
Kabeza also encouraged the participants to use the workshop as an opportunity to co-create solutions capable of improving livelihoods, strengthening food systems, and building long-term resilience against climate-related shocks.
The workshop is expected to train stakeholders on agroecology principles and practices, enhancing collaboration among participating organizations, documenting case studies from Trócaire partners, and reinforcing advocacy efforts for sustainable agriculture.
