Kigali, Rwanda — A retired senior police officer has died after a landslide caused by heavy rainfall struck his home in Gasabo District on Sunday, February 22, according to Rwanda National Police.
The victim, CSP (Rtd) Richard Kamanzi, aged 57, was killed when a retaining wall collapsed onto his house in Kibagabaga Cell, Kimironko Sector. The incident occurred at around 1:00 p.m. in Rindiro Village following intense rainfall that hit parts of the country.
Authorities say the wall gave way after runoff water from a neighboring property seeped into the structure, weakening it before it collapsed. At the time of the accident, Kamanzi was reportedly resting in his bedroom when the debris fell onto the house.
Kigali Police spokesperson CIP Wellars Gahonzire confirmed the tragedy, expressing condolences to the bereaved family.
“We stand with the family during this difficult time following the loss of their loved one. Our immediate priority has been to help them find temporary shelter since their home was destroyed,” he said.
Police also urged residents to remain cautious during the rainy season by ensuring proper drainage around their homes to prevent water buildup that can lead to disasters such as landslides and wall collapses.
Gahonzire further advised the public to avoid seeking shelter under trees during storms, refrain from blocking water channels, and closely monitor children during periods of heavy rainfall.
The body of the deceased was taken to the Rwanda Military Hospital, while arrangements are underway to relocate the affected family from the unsafe site.
Heavy rains accompanied by strong winds and lightning were reported across several parts of Rwanda on Sunday. The Ministry in charge of Emergency Management (MINEMA) had earlier warned residents of continued rainfall expected between February 21 and 28, advising people to stay indoors during storms and avoid contact with metal objects.
The warning message circulated to the public also encouraged citizens to call emergency number 170 for assistance or further information.
