Kigali, Rwanda – Rwanda’s RSSB Tigers BBC made history on Wednesday night after defeating Egypt’s Al Ahly 106-97 in the semifinals of the 2026 Basketball Africa League (BAL), becoming the first Rwandan club to reach the competition’s final.
The highly anticipated match was played at BK Arena on May 27 and attracted thousands of basketball fans, including President Paul Kagame, who attended the game as the guest of honor.
The semifinal clash began with both sides showing caution and intensity, with neither team able to establish a clear advantage during the opening stages. The first half ended level at 50-50 after a closely contested battle.
In the second half, the home crowd rallied behind RSSB Tigers stars including Teafale Lenard Jr., Ntore Habimana, Mangok Mathiang, and their teammates, who responded with an impressive offensive display.
The Rwandan side dominated much of the final 20 minutes, maintaining control of the game despite pressure from the Egyptian giants. Their disciplined defense and fast-paced attacking play ultimately secured a 106-97 victory, sending BK Arena into celebration.
The win marks a historic milestone for Rwandan basketball, as RSSB Tigers become the first team from Rwanda to qualify for the BAL final since the league was established.
The Tigers will now face the winner between defending champions Petro de Luanda of Angola and Libya’s Al Ahly Ly, who are scheduled to play later on Wednesday night.
The BAL final is expected to attract significant attention as RSSB Tigers seek to crown their remarkable campaign with a continental title on home soil.
