The Rwanda Investigation Bureau has arrested a man identified as Habarurema Jean D’amour over allegations of sexually assaulting multiple women after luring them with fake job opportunities.
According to investigations, the suspect operated through a WhatsApp group known as “Shaka Umukunzi” (translated as “Find a Lover”), where job advertisements were also shared among members seeking employment.
Authorities say Habarurema would identify women in the group who expressed interest in finding jobs and contact them privately. He allegedly deceived them by claiming he had secured employment opportunities for them in Shyorongi.
After gaining their trust, he would send them transport fare and arrange a meeting. Upon arrival, the suspect reportedly lured the victims into a nearby forest close to his residence, where he sexually assaulted them and robbed them of their belongings after threatening to kill them.
The suspect was arrested after allegedly targeting and assaulting several victims, including a minor. Some victims managed to escape before being assaulted, though one was reportedly stabbed while attempting to resist.
The victims are said to have come from different areas, including the City of Kigali, as well as Kamonyi and Bugesera districts.
Habarurema is currently facing three charges: rape, attempted murder, and defilement.
The Rwanda Investigation Bureau has commended individuals who provided information leading to the suspect’s arrest. It also warned that such crimes will not be tolerated and urged the public to remain vigilant, particularly against individuals who lure others with false promises, including job offers.
