Sheikh Ahmed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, a prominent member of Dubai’s ruling family and long-serving chairman of Al Wasl Sports Club, has died at the age of 76.
His death was announced on Monday, September 21, 2026, by the Dubai Ruler’s Court, which declared 10 days of official mourning across the emirate, with flags to be flown at half-mast throughout the period.
Sheikh Ahmed was the younger brother of Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President and Prime Minister of the United Arab Emirates and Ruler of Dubai.
In a tribute to his brother, Sheikh Mohammed prayed for his mercy and described him as someone who would remain in the family’s prayers and hearts.
“You are absent from our eyes but not from our prayers and hearts,” Sheikh Mohammed said.
Sheikh Ahmed had a long career in the UAE’s military and security institutions. He graduated from the Royal Military Academy Sandhurst in Britain in 1975 and later served as commander of Dubai’s Central Military Region. He subsequently became Deputy Chairman of Dubai Police and Public Security.
Beyond his military and public service, Sheikh Ahmed was one of the key figures in the development of sport in Dubai.
He was among the group that founded Al Wasl Sports Club in 1960 and remained closely associated with the club for decades. Under his leadership, Al Wasl became one of the most decorated clubs in UAE football, winning eight UAE Pro League titles. Its most recent league championship came in the 2023/24 season.
His contribution to sport extended beyond football. He helped establish the Dubai International Marine Club in 1988 and played a significant role in developing horse racing in Dubai, including the establishment of Jebel Ali Racecourse.
Sheikh Ahmed was also involved in business and charitable activities, including serving as chairman of A.R.M. Holding and the Dubai Real Estate Centre.
The 10-day mourning period in Dubai began on September 21, following the official announcement of his death. No cause of death was given in the official announcement.
