DALLAS, US — US President Donald Trump has said he wants every adult American to receive $5,000 if Republicans retain control of Congress following the midterm elections scheduled for November.
Trump made the remarks at a Republican Party meeting in Dallas, where he urged supporters to treat the upcoming elections as though he himself were on the ballot, despite not being a candidate.
He said voters who continue to support Republican candidates would receive what he described as a “Trump dividend.”
“If the Republicans win, it will be your victory too, and you will get $5,000. It will be called the Trump dividend,” Trump said.
Trump did not explain where the money would come from or how it would be distributed, saying only that the United States was bringing in large amounts of money.
If implemented for all adult Americans, the proposal could cost the US government more than $1 trillion, based on the figures cited in the report.
Trump called on his supporters to back Republican candidates in the November 3 elections, saying their votes would help determine the direction of the country in the years ahead.
“I ask you to imagine that I am on the ballot,” he said.
The proposal comes as Trump faces concerns over declining public confidence amid rising prices and the US conflict with Iran.
What are the US midterm elections?
The midterm elections take place halfway through a US president’s four-year term. Americans do not vote for president during these elections, but choose members of Congress, including members of the House of Representatives and some senators, as well as other officials at state and local levels.
The elections are widely viewed as an important measure of public sentiment toward the sitting president and can determine which party controls Congress.
A strong Republican performance would allow Trump’s party to maintain or strengthen its influence in Congress, while losses could make it more difficult for his administration to advance its legislative agenda.
