Rwanda Investigation Bureau spokesperson Dr. Thierry Murangira has confirmed that the case file of Eric Semuhungu has been forwarded to the prosecution.
According to reports, Semuhungu was arrested on April 9, 2026, and is facing three serious charges, including rape, distributing explicit sexual content through digital platforms, and defamation-related offenses.
Under Rwandan law, the offenses carry significant penalties if proven in court:
- Rape: As outlined in Article 134 of the penal code, the offense is punishable by a prison sentence ranging from 10 to 15 years, along with a fine between Rwf1 million and Rwf2 million.
- Publishing explicit sexual content online: Under cybercrime laws, this offense carries a sentence of 3 to 5 years in prison and a fine ranging from Rwf1 million to Rwf3 million.
- Defamation or threats of defamation: This offense is punishable by 1 to 3 years in prison and a fine between Rwf100,000 and Rwf300,000.
Semuhungu, 38, is known in Rwanda’s entertainment industry for organizing high-profile events, particularly in upscale bars and nightlife venues.
Authorities say the case will now proceed through the prosecution process, where further legal action will be determined.
