Anita Annet Among, a Ugandan politician currently under intense investigation by the country’s security agencies over alleged corruption, has announced that she will not seek re-election as Speaker of Parliament, a position she has held for the past four years.
For weeks, reports had circulated claiming that Among had been summoned by President Yoweri Museveni and instructed not to contest again for the leadership of Parliament. Despite the speculation, she had previously maintained that she intended to run for another term.
Since Saturday, May 16, 2026, Ugandan security and intelligence agencies have reportedly been conducting searches at her residence as part of ongoing investigations into allegations of corruption and illicit accumulation of wealth.
In a statement shared on X, Among said that after extensive consultations with different stakeholders and following deep personal reflection, she had decided, in the interest of unity and transparency within the ruling National Resistance Movement (NRM), to withdraw from the race for Speaker of Uganda’s Parliament.
“I commit to fully supporting the candidates endorsed by the President and the party, and I urge my colleagues in the 12th Parliament to do the same,” she wrote.
Among now appears to be under growing political pressure in Uganda following allegations linked to corruption and extravagant spending. Critics have particularly pointed to her appearance during President Museveni’s swearing-in ceremony, where she was reportedly dressed in outfits valued at more than 43 million Ugandan shillings.
She is also known for owning several high-end luxury vehicles manufactured in the United States, further fueling public debate about the source of her wealth and accusations that she uses extravagant displays to project power and influence.
