Two Killed, Six Injured in Tour du Rwanda Stage One Accident

Two people have died and six others were injured following a road accident that occurred during Stage One of the Tour du Rwanda 2026 on Sunday.

According to a public notice issued by the race management, the incident happened in the Gabiro area when a caravan vehicle veered off the road and struck several spectators who had gathered to watch the competition.

Authorities confirmed that two victims lost their lives at the scene, while six others sustained injuries of varying degrees. The injured were immediately rushed for medical care and are currently receiving treatment as officials monitor their condition.

The Rwanda National Police has launched investigations to determine the exact cause of the accident.

In its statement, the Tour du Rwanda management expressed deep sorrow over the tragedy, extending condolences to the families of the victims and reaffirming its commitment to public safety during the international cycling event.

The accident cast a somber mood over what had begun as an exciting opening stage of the race, which attracted large crowds of supporters along the route despite challenging weather conditions.
