Large crowds from different parts of the country turned up in big numbers to support cyclists during the opening stage of this year’s Tour du Rwanda, despite heavy rainfall that soaked much of the route.
From early morning, enthusiastic fans lined the roadsides, cheering loudly and waving flags as riders passed through towns and villages. The challenging weather conditions did little to dampen the spirit of both supporters and competitors, who showed remarkable determination throughout the race.
The cyclists maintained strong momentum until the finish, with the first rider crossing the line at 8:52 a.m. in Rwamagana District.
Israeli cyclist Itamar Einhorn, riding for the NSN Development Team, sprinted to victory, winning Stage One after a thrilling finish.
Sunday’s opening stage also the longest of this year’s race covered 174 kilometers, stretching from Rukomo Sector in Gicumbi District to Rwamagana in Eastern Province.
The dramatic start sets an energetic tone for the rest of the competition, with strong fan engagement and intense performances already highlighting the excitement surrounding Tour du Rwanda 2026.
